Holistic approach to medicine: complementary, integrative and time tested
A holistic approach.
Stress relief.
Stress is silent but can have drastic affects on the body no matter what the cause. It is also common to have increased stress associated with pain and injuries . Studies show that acupuncture stimulates the body to release naturally occurring hormones that help balance mood and sleep. This allows the body to relax and heal faster.
Gentle approach.
I have cultivated a gentle approach to my practice and with many years of clinical experience and practice, my needling technique does not cause pain. It is an art, a mastery of technique ~ to heal and stimulate the bodies' natural ability to repair without causing pain and discomfort.
- When I develop treatment plans, the health of the whole person is considered. This goes beyond a "parts and pieces" approach. Sometimes our condition is caused by multiple contributing factors. If the area of pain is treated without considering all systems, the body can not completely find balance.
- I observe if the body has created compensation to protect the area of pain and injury. Compensation causes muscles in the surrounding the area of pain to tighten, causing an additional layer of imbalance because tension is building.
- I observe if the body has any systemic imbalance that needs support. For example, is someone isn't sleeping well they are not resting and repairing appropriately so the body may have to work harder to heal. When we support sleep in addition, I see greater clinical outcomes. Sleep is just one aspect I look at when developing treatment plans.
- In my experience, patients have greater and longer lasting relief when the area of pain, the areas of compensation and any underlying imbalance are addressed. This is the beauty of a holistic approach to medicine.

- When the nervous system can relax, healing can begin. For most people, I will add acupuncture points to address the effects that stress is having on the body. I have found that people respond better to treatment when I have been successful in calming the nervous system.
- One way I treat stress is with auricular acupuncture points aka ear acupuncture. These acupuncture point in the ear help down-regulate the nervous system to ease tension from the body due to stress and anxiety. I have literally witnessed thousands of people immediately relaxing after I gently placed a few tiny needles in the ear. In recent years, the Veteran's Administration developed a protocol called Battlefield Acupuncture using select acupuncture auricular points to treat PTSD. Occasionally if I am not at my clinic and I am unable to provide an acupuncture treatment for someone I often quickly apply just auricular ear acupuncture, it helps the person get by until they are able to receive a full acupuncture treatment.
- Acupuncture is amazing for stress relief. Studies have shown the negative effects stress has on our bodies. Studies have also shown that acupuncture has a positive effect on stress in the body by releasing protective hormones.
